The Karoo has some of the darkest skies on earth, which is why the country's big telescopes are at Sutherland. From most of the interior, the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a shadow on a moonless night, and the southern sky has things the north never sees: the Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross, the centre of the galaxy directly overhead in winter. You do not need equipment. You need a stay far from town lights, a clear night and somewhere to lie down.
The Western Cape's Karoo edge, from the Tankwa through Sutherland to Prince Albert and the Swartberg, and the Cederberg with its own observatory, are the classic spots and where most stays on this page are. The Northern Cape, the Kgalagadi and the Richtersveld are darker still and emptier. Namibia's NamibRand, an International Dark Sky Reserve, is on the same page under its own country.
Winter, May to August, is the season: dry, cloudless and cold, with the galactic core overhead in the early evening. Plan around the new moon for the darkest sky, and check whether your host has a telescope, a guided night or just a good deck. Pair a night under the stars with a gravel ride through the Karoo by day, a 4x4 trail into the desert, or a Victorian village stay in one of the Karoo towns.
Winter, from May to August, when the Karoo and the interior are dry and cloudless and the centre of the Milky Way is overhead in the evening. Aim for the week around the new moon for the darkest sky. Summer skies are often hazy with dust and thunderstorms inland.
The Karoo, especially around Sutherland, the Tankwa and Prince Albert; the Cederberg; the Northern Cape deserts including the Kgalagadi and the Richtersveld; and NamibRand in Namibia, a certified International Dark Sky Reserve. Anywhere more than an hour from a town in the interior will be far darker than a city sky.
No. Under a true dark sky the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds and the brighter clusters are visible to the naked eye, and binoculars show far more. Some hosts have telescopes or run guided sessions, and Sutherland has public viewing nights at the observatory.
The same remote places are the country's best gravel cycling, 4x4 and hiking country by day. Karoo towns such as Prince Albert, Nieu-Bethesda and Sutherland add Victorian architecture, padstals and long quiet roads.
